Product and service reviews

In my work with children and adolescents I have needed to explore many products and services that would help them.  Some are fine, some are so-so, and some are a lot of expense for little or no benefit for home and school.  I have decided to share with my readers, different products and services that will help or provide information.  While some may be expensive, they are ones that I feel do give benefit for the price.  I do try to find a variety of resources to help as many families as I can. If you have a product or service you would like me to review, please send it to info@allchildrenarespecial.com.

Total Transformation Program:

You have probably seen ads on TV for this program.  How to help your children be less disrespectful, obnoxious or verbally abusive.  You wondered if it was worthwhile or another scam.

I can tell you, after reviewing it, that this program is all that I teach parents one-on-one in my practice.  James Lehman MSW puts the information in plain language, with examples to help you understand why situations occur, and how to change them.  He helps parents learn to understand the "whys" of behavior. He then provides strategies to turn around behavior.  Basically, he teaches what I preach - discipline with respect.

Total Focus: A Comprehensive Program to Improve Attention, Concentration, & Self Control in Children:

Do you get frustrated with how many times you find yourself repeating directions to your child?  Do you frequently have to resort to threats of grounding or losing a toy or privilege before your child will do what you want? Do you feel like a referee when your children can't get along, or they can't get along with their friends?

Dr. Robert Myers, a child psychologist from California knows what you have been going through. He has worked with families on these issues for decades.  He also dealt with it with his own son, who had ADHD.

Now he has compiled the strategies and interventions which worked on his son and the many families he has worked with into the Total Focus program.

I reviewed the program and found that Dr. Meyers is very savvy about the "whys" of children's and parents' behaviors.  He has packaged many of the same strategies that I have shared with parents into this program.  This includes the "put the toy in time out instead of the child" strategy.  This strategy when used with the language that he encourages parents to use, helps children learn to take ownership of their behaviors.

He also uses many of the relaxation strategies that I have taught children over the years, to help decrease anxiety and fears, and to develop skills in focus and organization.

You will find his program to be very useful in learning how to help your child.  You do have to be willing to follow his recommendations for language used, just as I encourage parents to, because they have been  found to be more effective than the anger, threats, and put downs that we have used in the past.
